01Introduction
This Privacy Policy explains how AlexaMods Lab ("we," "us," "our") handles information in connection with ScanLens: QR Scanner (package name com.alexamodslab.scanlens), an Android application distributed through Google Play. It applies to everyone who downloads, installs, or uses the app.
ScanLens is designed around a simple principle: your scans are yours. The app reads QR codes and barcodes using your device's camera or a photo you choose, decodes them on-device, and keeps a history of what you've scanned locally on your phone. We do not require you to create an account, and we do not operate a server that stores your scan content.
By using ScanLens, you agree to the practices described in this Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, please do not use the app.
02Information We Collect
ScanLens is a "no-account" utility app. The information involved in running it falls into three narrow categories:
- Scan data (on-device only): the decoded content of QR codes and barcodes you scan, along with a timestamp, saved to your device's local storage so you can revisit your scan history.
- Camera and photo input (not stored by us): live camera frames processed in real time to detect codes, or an image you deliberately pick from your gallery to scan. Neither the camera feed nor the picture itself is uploaded, copied to a server, or retained by AlexaMods Lab.
- Advertising and diagnostic identifiers: limited technical identifiers (such as the Android Advertising ID and standard network/device information) collected by Google Mobile Ads (AdMob) to serve and measure ads, as described in Section 10.
We do not collect your name, email address, phone number, precise or approximate location, contacts, SMS messages, call logs, calendar entries, or microphone audio. ScanLens does not access any of these on your device.
Permissions ScanLens requests
| Permission | Why ScanLens uses it |
|---|---|
CAMERA | Required to open the live viewfinder (via CameraX) and detect QR codes/barcodes in real time. No image or video is recorded or stored. |
INTERNET | Required to request and display ads through Google AdMob and to load the UMP consent form. Not used to upload your scan history. |
ACCESS_NETWORK_STATE | Lets the app check connectivity before requesting an ad, so it can avoid unnecessary network calls when offline. |
READ_MEDIA_IMAGES | On Android 13+, lets you pick an existing photo from your gallery to scan a code contained in it. |
READ_MEDIA_VISUAL_USER_SELECTED | On Android 14+, supports Android's "Selected Photos" access, so you can grant ScanLens access to only the specific images you choose to scan. |
READ_EXTERNAL_STORAGE (Android 12 and below only) | Legacy permission needed on older Android versions to let you select an image from storage to scan. Not requested on Android 13+. |
VIBRATE | Provides a short haptic pulse to confirm a successful scan. Purely a feedback cue; collects no data. |
Every permission above is used strictly for the described functionality. ScanLens does not repurpose any permission to collect data beyond what is necessary for scanning, feedback, or ad delivery.
03How We Use Information
- To decode QR codes and barcodes and show you the result immediately.
- To build and display your local scan history so you can find past scans.
- To provide haptic feedback confirming a successful scan.
- To display advertising through Google AdMob and manage your consent choices through Google UMP.
- To keep the app stable and secure (e.g., standard crash and performance signals that may be collected by the Android platform and Google Play services independently of ScanLens).
We do not use any information collected by ScanLens to profile you for purposes unrelated to the app's advertising, and we do not sell personal information to third parties.
04Camera Permission
ScanLens uses Android's CameraX library to power the live scanning viewfinder. When you open the scan screen, the app requests the CAMERA permission so it can analyze frames locally, on your device, to find and decode QR codes and barcodes.
You can deny or revoke camera access at any time in Android Settings → Apps → ScanLens → Permissions. If camera access is denied, live scanning will not function, but you can still scan codes from existing photos where permitted.
05Photo Access
ScanLens lets you scan a code that already appears in a picture on your device, instead of using the live camera. Depending on your Android version, this uses READ_MEDIA_IMAGES, READ_MEDIA_VISUAL_USER_SELECTED, or the legacy READ_EXTERNAL_STORAGE permission (Android 12 and below).
ScanLens only reads the specific image you select through the system picker in order to decode it. The image is not uploaded, copied elsewhere on the device, or shared with any third party. If you use Android's "Select Photos" access, only the photos you explicitly choose are visible to the app.
06Scan History
Each time you scan a QR code or barcode, ScanLens saves the decoded text and a timestamp in a local history list so you can revisit it later. This history is stored entirely on your device and is never transmitted to AlexaMods Lab or any third-party server.
You control this history directly in the app: you can delete individual entries or clear your entire scan history at any time from the History screen.
07Local Storage
ScanLens does not use cloud storage and does not synchronize your scan history, settings, or any app data across devices or to remote servers. All app data lives in the app's private storage area on your Android device, governed by Android's standard app sandboxing.
Uninstalling ScanLens removes this locally stored data from your device, subject to any device-level backups you have configured through Android's own backup system (which we do not control).
08Google Play Data Safety
This section summarizes ScanLens's data handling in plain terms, consistent with the data safety information declared on our Google Play Store listing:
- Data ScanLens collects: decoded scan results and timestamps, saved only in local, on-device scan history. ScanLens does not collect your name, email, phone number, precise location, contacts, SMS, call logs, calendar entries, or microphone audio.
- Data Google AdMob may process: the Android Advertising ID, general device and app information, and ad interaction data, used by Google to serve and measure advertising as described in Section 10.
- Scan history: stored locally on your device only — never uploaded to AlexaMods Lab or any third-party server.
- Deletion control: you can delete individual scan entries or clear your entire history at any time from within the app; see Section 15.
- No account required: ScanLens has no sign-up, sign-in, or user profile of any kind.
- No cloud synchronization: the app does not sync scan history, settings, or any other app data to a server or across devices.
This summary is provided for transparency and reflects the same data practices declared in ScanLens's Google Play Data Safety section; if either ever differs, this Privacy Policy governs your rights, and we will promptly correct any discrepancy in the Play Store listing.
09Third-Party Services
ScanLens integrates a small number of third-party libraries to support advertising and consent management. These are the only third-party data processors involved in the app:
- Google Mobile Ads (AdMob) — serves in-app advertising. See Section 10.
- Google User Messaging Platform (UMP) — manages consent and ad-personalization choices, particularly for users in the EEA, UK, and Switzerland. See Section 11.
These providers may process limited technical and advertising data under their own privacy policies. We encourage you to review the official documentation below for details on how Google handles this data:
10Google AdMob
ScanLens uses Google AdMob to display advertising that helps keep the app free. AdMob may collect information such as your Advertising ID, general device information, coarse network signals, and ad interaction data to select, deliver, and measure ads.
AdMob operates independently of ScanLens's own scanning features — it never receives your scan history, photos, or camera data. Ad-related data collection and its legal basis are governed by Google's advertising policies and, where applicable, your consent choices captured through the UMP form described below.
Official reference: Google AdMob — How AdMob uses data.
11Google User Messaging Platform (UMP)
Where legally required — for example, for users in the European Economic Area, the UK, and Switzerland — ScanLens presents a consent form built with Google's User Messaging Platform before showing personalized ads. This form lets you choose whether to allow personalized advertising, view the list of ad technology partners, and change your choice later.
You can revisit or change your consent choices at any time from the app's Privacy/Consent option in Settings, which reopens the UMP consent form.
Official reference: Google User Messaging Platform (UMP) documentation.
12Advertising ID
Android assigns your device a resettable Advertising ID that AdMob may use to measure ad performance and, where you've consented, personalize the ads you see. This identifier is provided by the Android operating system, not generated by ScanLens.
You can reset your Advertising ID or opt out of personalized advertising at any time from your Android device: Settings → Google → Ads → Delete advertising ID (or "Opt out of Ads Personalization," depending on your Android version).
13Cookies & Similar Technologies
ScanLens itself does not use browser cookies, as it is a native Android app rather than a website. However, the AdMob SDK embedded in the app may use device identifiers and similar mobile technologies (such as software identifiers stored by the ad SDK) that function similarly to cookies, in order to serve and measure advertising, as described above.
This privacy policy webpage does not set analytics or advertising cookies on your browser.
14Data Retention
- Scan history: retained locally on your device until you delete individual entries, clear your history, or uninstall the app.
- Camera/photo input: not retained at all — processed transiently in memory to decode a code, then discarded.
- Advertising identifiers: retained by Google/AdMob according to Google's own retention practices, until you reset or opt out of your Advertising ID.
AlexaMods Lab does not operate servers that store your scan content, so there is no remote copy of your scan history for us to retain or delete on your behalf — it exists only on your device.
15Data Deletion
Because ScanLens stores your scan history locally and does not require an account, you are always in direct control of deletion:
- Delete a single scan entry from the History screen.
- Clear your entire scan history from within the app's History or Settings screen.
- Uninstall the app to remove all locally stored app data from your device.
To reset advertising-related identifiers, use your Android device's Advertising ID settings described in Section 12. If you have questions about deletion, contact us using the details in Section 23.
16Security
ScanLens relies on Android's application sandboxing to keep your locally stored scan history isolated from other apps on your device. Because we do not transmit or store your scan data on our own servers, there is no central AlexaMods Lab database of scan content that could be exposed in a server-side breach.
No method of electronic storage on a mobile device is 100% secure. We recommend keeping your device's operating system updated and using your device's built-in lock screen protection.
17Children's Privacy (COPPA)
ScanLens is a general-audience utility app and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. ScanLens does not require registration, does not collect names or contact details, and does not include social features, in keeping with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).
If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us at the email in Section 23 so we can investigate and, if necessary, take appropriate action.
18GDPR Rights
If you are located in the European Economic Area, the UK, or Switzerland, you have rights under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), including the right to:
- Access the categories of data processed in connection with the app (mainly advertising identifiers, since scan history stays on your device).
- Withdraw or adjust advertising consent at any time through the UMP consent form.
- Request erasure of advertising-related identifiers via your device's Advertising ID settings.
- Object to processing based on legitimate interest, where applicable.
- Lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.
Because ScanLens does not operate user accounts or a central data store, most of your data footprint sits with Google's advertising services and your own device — the sections above explain how to control both.
19GDPR Legal Basis
For users in the European Economic Area, the UK, and Switzerland, we rely on the following legal bases under the GDPR to process the limited data associated with ScanLens:
- Consent: Where personalized advertising requires it, we rely on the consent you give (or decline) through the Google UMP consent form described in Section 11. You can withdraw this consent at any time from the app's Settings, without affecting the lawfulness of processing carried out before withdrawal.
- Legitimate Interests: We and our advertising partners may rely on legitimate interests to serve non-personalized advertising, measure basic ad performance, and keep ScanLens free to use, balanced against your right to privacy. Scan history and camera/photo input are processed under your direct instruction to use the app's core scanning feature, not under a separate legitimate-interest basis, since that data never leaves your device.
- Legal Obligations: Where applicable, we may process or disclose limited information to comply with a legal obligation, such as responding to a valid request from a competent authority or complying with Google Play policy requirements.
You can exercise your rights connected to any of these legal bases as described in Section 18 above.
20CCPA / CPRA Rights
If you are a California resident, the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), as amended by the CPRA, gives you the right to:
- Know what categories of personal information are collected and how they are used.
- Request deletion of personal information we hold (noting that scan history is stored locally on your device, not by us).
- Opt out of the "sale" or "sharing" of personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising, via the Advertising ID controls in Section 12 or your device's Android privacy settings.
- Non-discrimination for exercising your privacy rights.
We do not sell personal information in the traditional sense of exchanging it for money. Advertising identifiers may be shared with Google/AdMob for ad delivery and measurement, which can be considered "sharing" under CPRA; you can limit this through the opt-out controls described above.
21International Users
ScanLens is available to users worldwide. Because scan history and photo/camera input are processed and stored locally on your device rather than on our servers, there is generally no cross-border transfer of that content by AlexaMods Lab. Limited advertising identifiers processed by Google/AdMob may be transferred and processed in accordance with Google's own international data transfer safeguards.
22Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in the app's functionality, legal requirements, or our practices. Material changes will be reflected by updating the "Last Updated" date and, where appropriate, the version number shown in Section 26. We encourage you to review this page periodically.
